Antique Martin Gilt Brass & Silver Augsburg Sundial-Compass


Offered for sale is this spactular antique Gilt Brass and Silver Augsburg Compass Sundial, made by Johann Martin (1701-1785), with hinged hour ring numbered 3-12-9, with central stutt with rod gnomon, the latitude are numbered 5-90 degrees, the dial-plate with central compass basin delineated for four compass points (initialed) and magnetic north and hinged plum-bob support, the reverse with table of city latitudes and three support feet, 1 3/4" wide.

This outstanding Equinoctial Compass-Sundial, by Johann Martin, circa 1700, with elongated octagonal, the base set with a compass with a blued-iron needle and engraved with the names and latitudes of various continental cities, the hour ring with Roman numbers I-IX and III-XII, the folding latitude engraved for 5-90 degrees, and signed 'Johann Martin in Augsburg 4-8".
