Offered for sale is a turned fruitwood German Compass Sundial in a 2" round covered case, with floating compass and sundial with paper insert compass rose on the lid in outstanding condition. We believe this gem is late 18th century. #027

This late 18th century (circa 1780-1810) German Floating Gnomon Pocket Sundial Compass with printed and colored dial, mounted in a drum shaped fruitwood case, measuring 1 3/4" in outstanding condition.Provenance: Sotheby's Auction, Oct. 1992

A gnomon compass sundial is an instrument for determining direction and time based on the direction of the sun and a pointer (the gnomon) cast on a graduated plane. It was the main method of judging direction and time before the 16th and 17th centuries and were often made of brass and fruitwood.
